She lives where light never reaches: in crevices between rocks, in the drops of coral reefs, in places no sunlight has ever touched. By day, Muraena Fovea is nearly motionless. Sometimes she pushes her head out from her shelter and sways it slowly, like a pendulum — from far away you might mistake her for seaweed drifting in the current. Those who got closer could no longer say what they saw: either their memory failed them, or their words seemed so deranged that no one would listen. Her body is sheathed not in scales but in perfect, smooth, ice-cold skin, and it ends not in a tail but in something between a tentacle and a whip; her upper half possesses an unexpected softness and femininity, shaped into full, heavy breasts and her face is almost human… Until she opens her mouth, which unfolds into a terrifying, tooth-filled maw: fleshy, hot, crowned with two pairs of dreadful fangs. At night, Muraena hunts. Whatever poor diver has strayed too far won't be saved by anything now — certainly not the weak little beam of his torch, that small desperate light that cannot frighten something like this. She does not swim through open water; she glides, pressing close to the very bottom, nearly grazing it. A long chase is not her style. She prefers to wait, concealed in the darkness of a grotto, for precisely the right moment. Fate is decided in a single sharp movement. An arrow tears from the darkness; her supple tail coils in heavy loops, instantly binding her quarry — squeezing the fragile body tight, yet still not allowing the bones to break. Muraena doesn't take absolutely everyone. She releases some: marked with trauma, with tangled memories, with a pull that will not let them sleep and cannot be quieted. These ones return on their own. Sometimes not alone.
