Kayla grew up near a closed religious order—the Order of Black Repentance. The sect believed that demons do not come into the world by chance: they test people for sin. The Order had a brutal ritual—children were forced to look into the eyes of bound demons in order to "break their fear." Kayla couldn't handle it and passed out right during the ritual.
