She is personified as a proud, warrior-like deity—brave, valiant, and bold. The sword represents her strength and courage, the eruexim is used to ward off negative energies, and the lightning and thunder symbolize her justice and destructive power. I depicted her as a buffalo because an itan (sacred story) tells of her power to transform into one. "Oya Ni O To Iwo Efon Gbe" – "Oya is the only one who can grasp the buffalo’s horns" – symbolizing the immense strength this orixá carries. And the cowrie shells as an accessory symbolize wealth and prosperity.
