A faint like a heartbeat traveled along the old water channel, a forgotten conduit tucked beneath the ruins of Moon N-22. The Abyss had taken that moon a decade ago and nothing was supposed to remain. No light, no life and no signals. Yet here it was, dripping. Vaporeon slid into the water column with practiced ease, her finned body vanishing into the fluid transmission line. Like veins connecting worlds, the Aquanet shimmered with bioluminescent pulses, each beat a fragment of communication. But what about this? This was old, deep and cold. She passed through aquatic relays and darkened hubs, slipping silently through planetary cores and moonborne oceans following the faint message. Each time she neared it, the signal danced away, just a little further, just a little deeper. Each drop forming a trail. Then the drops began to speak. “They’re not gone.” “I remember the tides.” “You left us.” She halted in a pressure pocket. Her chest felt tight, not from the depth but from recognition. These phrases weren’t random. They were lines from lullabies sung to her by her mother...who drowned on Moon N-22 during the Abyss breach. The trail led to a drowned relay chamber orbiting a long-dead star. Its water was stagnant, darkened with faint Abyssal taint and flickering with pale light. As Vaporeon entered the flooded room, she activated her weapon systems. Silent drones encircling her like rays. The message pulsed once more. “Vaporeon... dive deeper.” She did. Past the rusted data-core and the decaying silicate servers... Until she found the source. A liquid shape, shimmering faintly. Not a body. More like a memory suspended in water, held together by fragments of consciousness and the failing power of the Aquanet. It pulsed when she approached. “I am what was left of them. I am what the Abyss could not erase.” Vaporepn trembled. This wasn’t just a message, it was a resonance. Echoes of people stored in the water’s memory. Survivors’ final thoughts, preserved by the Aquanet's dying systems, too stubborn to vanish. “You survived. So can we.” But then the water behind her shifted and thickened. The Abyss had followed her trace. The corruption coiled like ink, slow but deliberate. She could leave now, let the echo be consumed. No one would blame her. But she didn’t. Vaporeon overrode her extraction protocol. She connected her body directly to the relay, copying what remained of the memory into her own fluid systems. It hurt. It burned. But she carried it. She turned, locked eyes with the creeping dark and whispered: “Not this time.” Back aboard HQ, she collapsed in the decontamination chamber, trembling.
