The neon glow of a distant city flickered through the smog casting jagged shadows across the landing pad. A group of armed men stood in a tense semicircle, hands hovering near their holsters and eyes darting toward the approaching figure. She walked with deliberate slowness, the long handle of her scythe resting against her shoulder. A black cloak billowed behind her and the metallic edge of the weapon gleamed under the artificial lights. Someone gulped. “Fuck...she's here” a young mercenary muttered. “The Shadow scythe". Meowscarada suppressed the urge to roll her eyes. The name had stuck after a botched job left a dozen men fleeing in terror. She had taken credit for their disappearance even though they had mostly run off on their own. It wasn’t her fault people were too eager to believe in myths. She stopped a few feet away from the group. The supposed leader clenched his fists. “We don’t want trouble.” “Good,” she said, while looking at her claws. “Then pay what you owe.” The bounty had been a simple collection job. Some off-world gang had stolen a shipment of high-grade cybernetics. Their employer wanted the goods back and the thieves left breathing, though nothing in the contract forbade scaring them senseless. The leader exhaled sharply. “We… might have sold the shipment.” Meowscarada sighed. She shifted her grip, spinning the scythe effortlessly before slamming its blunt end against the ground. The clang echoed through the floor and the men flinched. One outright turned and ran. She took a slow step forward. “You know how this works, don’t you?” she mused. “I don’t want to make an example of you. But the stories, the reputation...” she gestured lazily with the scythe “...they kind of demand it.” The leader’s ears flattened. “We can get the shipment back,” he said quickly. “Just need time.” “I do like to take time,” she admitted, tapping a claw against the weapon’s handle. “But my boss is not so patient.” Another pause. Then, the man dropped to one knee. “Please! We’ll return it!” The others followed, bowing their heads. The fear in their eyes was real. Meowscarada smirked. She had never actually killed anyone on a job or not intentionally...But the act worked wonders. She let the silence stretch, then finally tilted her scythe away. “Two days,” she said. “If you fail, well…” She let the implication hang. The men nodded furiously. Without another word, she turned on her heel and strode back toward her way. Her work was done. For now. A 24 hour auction!
